Participants explore the story of St. Julie Billiart, the Notre Dame de Namur Hallmarks, Catholic Social Teaching, and the concept of mission integration—how the charism and values of the Sisters are woven into every aspect of a school, healthcare center, or ministry. The program emphasizes collaborative leadership, stewardship, and the responsibility of board members to protect and advance the mission through thoughtful governance and decision-making.


In addition to mission formation, the orientation provides practical guidance on nonprofit governance, fiduciary duties, board responsibilities, strategic oversight, and financial literacy. Through discussion, reflection, and real-world scenarios, board members gain a clearer understanding of their role in supporting the Head of Ministry, ensuring accountability, fostering sustainability, and helping lead the ministry into a vibrant future rooted in the values of justice, dignity, community, and service.

The West Coast Legacy Hallmarks Retreat invites educators and staff who are new to Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur sponsored ministries to step away from the demands of daily work and immerse themselves in the mission, spirituality, and educational tradition of Notre Dame de Namur. Through presentations, reflection, prayer, dialogue, and community-building, participants will explore the life and vision of St. Julie Billiart, the Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community, and the enduring values that shape our schools and ministries.

Set in a retreat environment, this three-day experience offers time to deepen relationships with colleagues from across the West Coast network, reflect on one's own vocation as an educator, and discover new ways to bring the Notre Dame de Namur mission to life in service to students, families, and the wider community. Participants will leave renewed in purpose, connected to a broader mission, and inspired to carry forward the legacy of St. Julie with hearts as wide as the world.

The Hallmark Retreat engages educators in reflection and conversation on the 7 Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community. We encourage all Notre Dame de Namur faculty and staff to attend a Hallmark retreat during the first several years of their tenure. The retreat includes time for learning, discussion with colleagues from across the SNDdeN network, and time to plan strategically with fellow teachers/colleagues from your own school or learning center. The retreat also includes time for personal reflection, rest, and socializing.

This event takes place at the Villa Maria del Mar, owned and operated by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a congregation of Catholic women religious. With a focus on the full development of each person, the Villa offers a sacred space for retreats, and provides a peaceful environment where guests can be encouraged, restored and renewed.
